Heroine for real

The only Bollywood actress fighting the upcoming civic polls, Kunika filed her nomination from ward 53 of Oshiwara on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket on Monday afternoon.

Known to play the 'vamp' with finesse (in some 89 films and 10 serials), the actress, with a total worth of Rs 1.2 crore, has campaigned for Congress MP Priya Dutt in the past. She sees the elections as an opportunity to find her worth among the citizens of Oshiwara for whom she has worked for the last 15 years. "I might not win, but by contesting, I will at least know whether the people here value my social work,".

Oshiwara has no dearth of problems including a rundown sewerage system, contaminated water supply and rampant growth of SRA schemes, all of which can be solved only by an educated candidate with an ability to bring the governance to the local level, says the actress, who has worked in soaps like Teacher, Swabhimaan, Sparsh, and the latest Kitty Party.

She has also worked in movies like Page3, Gumrah (by Mahesh Bhatt) and Hum Saath Saath Hain among others.

A year-and-half ago, the actress had filed a complaint against land sharks based on which the pollution boarddirected the MHADA to halt its massive Rs116 crore construction project at Lokhandwala (Seven 15-storey buildings with a total of 1088 flats) Andheri as the project took off without any environmental clearance.

Born to a Kannadiga father and a Scottish mother, the actress, with a 20-year-old son from the first marriage, and a five-year-old from the second, idolises 'Oprah Winfrey'.
